A resounding success!

August 03, 2017

Our 2016-2017 campaign was a huge success thanks to so many wonderful supporters. We were able to bring 29 students to the annual conference in Jacksonville and many of our members are currently filling internship positions across the globe as a direct result of attendance at the career fair. This number represents a 140% increase over the previous year's conference attendees, and we are looking forward to bringing even more to the next national conference to be held in Chicago in 2018.

At the conference, we were also awarded with:

  • Champions of Growth Award
  • Best Newsletter
  • Most Members - Western Region
  • Best Banner

Additionally, the UNLV William F. Harrah Hotel College recognized us as the Student Organization of the Year- a proud accomplishment!

The attached photograph was taken at our end of year appreciation banquet dinner. In attendance were many wonderful friends, family, industry colleagues, mentors, and financial supporters of our program. We were very fortunate that so many could join us to reflect on the amazing year we had. Thank you for your support, and please continue to follow our journey as we transform today's students into tomorrow's leaders.

Warm regards,

Your 2016-2017 UNLV NSMH Team

Thank You

December 30, 2016

We are in our final 14 hours before the project closes and while we came up short of our goal, we are still working on some additional funding sources to get as many students the opportunity as possible. Thank you so much to all who have donated. If you have any last minute donors waiting in the wings, please share our message! We very much look forward to sharing our conference experiences with you in a couple months when we return!

Holiday Gift Wrapping Success

December 23, 2016

We are diligently working toward our goal of bringing at least 25 members to the national conference. Tuesday concluded our Barnes & Noble fundraiser, in which enough funds were generated to cover one more student's trip and then some!

We have just one week left on our Rebel Raiser project and need your help spreading the word so that we can deliver this wonderful opportunity to our members. Thank you for helping us.

As a reminder, you will receive a donation receipt from the UNLV Foundation for tax purposes in the mail (some donors have already received them- they're quick!)

Tonight, Friday, December 23rd, several of our members will be volunteering at Opportunity Village's Magical Forest in Las Vegas. Please come by and say hello!

Growth and Experience: A message from last year's President Daniela Sanchez

December 15, 2016

Choosing who you want to work for can be difficult. Making sure you’re qualified can be more difficult. The UNLV National Society of Minorities in Hospitality helped me overcome both challenges. I started in the student-led organization as a freshman in college. What drew me in? Networking! The UNLV NSMH leadership team told me I would meet the top recruiters from great hospitality organizations. Their best piece of advice was to start early. Meet them as soon as you can because once you build those relationships, they won’t forget you. And they haven’t.

My career started as soon as I attended my first NSMH National Conference that same year. Aside from networking with both students and industry professionals, I attended professional development workshops. These workshops painted a picture of what work after college is like, but most importantly, they told you how to prepare for it all.  I attended the National Conference every year from then on. The key here was to ask the recruiters with the company you wanted to work for what they looked for in a candidate. Each year I worked to improve myself and came back with new questions.

The individuals that were giving me advice on how to prepare for my career are the same individuals recruiting me 3 years later. However, this is a two-way street. NSMH is also a great way to get to know companies better. With so many great hospitality companies out there, you need more than just a 2-hour mixer to decide which you align yourself with. Coming back every year was also about interviewing them. I attended their information sessions, mingled with them, and asked their newest recruits how their experience with the company was going. Now, as a senior, I am getting offers I dreamed of as a young freshman. My UNLV NSMH experience has been a blessing, more than these paragraphs can tell. Thank you for supporting the best Harrah Hotel College student organization!

Warm regards,

Daniela Sanchez

Why NSMH?

December 08, 2016

Thank you for visiting our page. This update is all about why supporting UNLV NSMH is a good idea. Read about a fantastic addition to the club this year and his experience with the organization, and then view the video from our very own Dr. Finley Cotrone! As always, please share our message far and wide. We are so very grateful for all the help we have received and can still use more help to get us there!

"As a freshman, NSMH has been the most welcoming, inspiring club that I have encountered at UNLV. From the first meeting, I knew that NSMH was an extremely professional organization that focused on benefiting its student members as much as possible. Attending the Regional Conference last month was an insightful opportunity to learn more about the hospitality industry as well as a great way to connect with other members. Getting to experience Nationals this year with NSMH would be an absolutely amazing chance to establish connections with industry professionals, develop my career in hospitality, and meet with other passionate members from across the country. I love NSMH for the enthusiastic people in the organization, many exciting club events, and the support they give me in becoming a future restaurateur and professional in hospitality. Through NSMH, I have found a home at UNLV."
