The Scarlet & Gray Free Press is UNLV’s only source of independent news on campus. The Scarlet & Gray, formerly known as the Rebel Yell, has been a part of the UNLV community for over 60 years. Our main goal is to keep the UNLV community informed, involved, and included in the university’s history.
The Scarlet & Gray’s staff works hard throughout the semester to provide quality content in our weekly print edition as well as our digital newspaper. Composed of writers, editors, photographers, marketers, and graphic designers from all academic disciplines, we make sure to not only keep history alive on campus but to provide a learning opportunity for our staff and to serve as the stepping stone into a professional career in journalism and marketing, or film/graphics.
The Scarlet & Gray attends journalistic excellence conferences every year, where we are proud to have won awards such as All-around Best Non-daily Student Newspaper and Best of Show for a Student Newspaper Website.
Being independently funded, we look for internal support, outside advertising, and partnerships with the community to secure our funding each year. Our staff must fundraise their entire operating budget for the year, including operating costs, travel fees for journalistic conferences, equipment, and staff stipends.
The Scarlet & Gray staff are extremely grateful for the support we receive each year, which helps us continue to serve the community of UNLV with informative coverage that will entertain and engage the university's community.
