The Road to Nationals Starts in Wisconsin
It's the start of a brand new season for the UNLV Rebel Girls' 2016-2017 team, and preparation begins this summer! In order to be eligible to compete in the United Dance Association (UDA) College National Championship, the girls must first attend a UDA training camp alongside some of their biggest competitors. This year, the Rebel Girls will spend four days in Wisconsin learning routines, taking master classes/workshops, performing, and receiving evaluations and feedback from UDA staff. The girls will then be able to take material and techniques learned at camp back home and apply them as they work towards their goals of winning another National Championship in 2017.
The UNLV Rebel Girls are the intercollegiate athletics Dance Team for the University of Nevada Las Vegas, who dance and cheer at all Men's Basketball and Football home games throughout the season. Additionally, the girls maintain high academic standards while training, performing, competing, and serving as ambassadors of the University at athletic events and throughout the greater Las Vegas community.
The girls' hard work and dedication has awarded them two Hip Hop Division 1A National Championship Titles, in 2013 and again in 2016, as well as opportunities such as performing on America's Got Talent and traveling to Nanjing, China to represent team USA.
Although the UNLV Rebel Girls abide by NCAA rules and regulations, Dance is not sanctioned as an NCAA sport, and therefore this dance team is not traditionally funded by the University. The girls must fundraise their entire operating budget in order to afford such expenses as traveling and lodging to both camp and Nationals, uniforms, equipment, training, etc. The girls are extremely grateful for the community support they receive each year, and hope for continued support as they move into the 2016-2017 season.
