"We shape our tools, and then our tools shape us" - Marshal McLuhan, Canadian Philosopher
UNLV's Theatre program challenges students in all aspects of production to empower them with skills that will shape careers marked by excellence. Las Vegas has long been a landmark for high-end entertainment and in order to develop innovative leaders with competitive skills in the industry, our spaces require 21st Century tools for emerging artists to work with, and we need your help to keep UNLV on the cutting edge.
All the world may be a stage, but at UNLV our Paul Harris Theatre is a lab and a classroom, in addition to a 99-seat space that welcomes artists and audience from the greater Las Vegas community. UNLV understands that upgrades to our performing arts spaces are essential to the service of its mission to promote and foster creative innovation and is in the process of replacing our audio gear and light dimming system, but the console (specialized computer equipment) that controls lighting fixtures is obsolete. We need your help installing a switch to turn the lights on in the Paul Harris Theatre!
The Strand Series 320 currently in the venue dates back to the early 1990s and is obsolete. We truly believe that "It's better to light a candle than curse the darkness," and time to introduce a new element into the venue - an ETC-EOS Element to be precise. This console is a versatile tool for students in training and professionals alike as well as a popular choice for many theatres across the country. Students who work with this technology will be better prepared for the next step in their careers, and the quality of audience experiences will be greatly enhanced. This affordable but exceptional option for lighting control is built to last and remain compatible for years to come.
About UNLV Theatre
Founded in 1959 by Paul Harris with extra-curricular funding from Dr. Lauren Brink, UNLV’s theatre opened its inaugural show, Sophocles’ “Antigone,” in an empty room in the Division of Humanities’ Grant Hall.
In 2003, the department founded Nevada Conservatory Theatre, a producing lab that features professional actors, designers, and directors working alongside advanced graduate and undergraduate students recruited from around the country, and serves a model of how to build a professional theatre while keeping expenses and ticket prices low.
The Department of Theatre in the College of Fine Arts offers a diversified curriculum, taught by experienced faculty that allows students to immerse themselves in all aspects of theater while taking advantage of the entertainment richness of Las Vegas. Whether it's in the classroom, on the stage, or behind the camera, the department of theatre fosters creative development and growth that prepares students for the world's stage.
Thank you for helping us make a lasting and positive impact on our students, and the great Las Vegas community!
